Making Disciples — Expanding the Mission of Christ

Introduction

John Wesley once said, “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God… such alone will shake the gates of hell.”¹ After His resurrection, Jesus gathered His disciples and gave them a mission which goes beyond their lifetime. He said: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” Matthew 28:19⁠. He was sending them to reproduce what they had received. Mission multiplies when transformed people reproduce faithful witnesses or make disciples.

The Greek command behind “make disciples” is mathēteusate. It means more than gaining converts; it means forming learners, followers, and obedient witnesses of Christ. Jesus was not only sending them to speak about Him, but to raise others who would also follow Him.

Witness Must Become Discipleship

Amos Yong writes that the Spirit’s work pushes the Church outward across boundaries, languages, and communities.² Jesus promised His followers power to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth Acts 1:8⁠. The movement was never meant to stop in one place, one generation, or one culture.

Witness begins with Gospel, but it must grow into discipleship. We do not merely tell people what Christ has done; we help them learn His ways, obey His Word, walk in His Spirit, and become witnesses themselves.

 The Spirit does not empower believers for private excitement alone, but for mission that reaches others and forms them in Christ.

The Nations Are Drawn to the Light

Lesslie Newbigin described the Church as a sign and instrument of God’s kingdom among the nations.³ Isaiah saw a day when nations would come to the light of God’s people Isaiah 60:3⁠. This vision is not about human greatness, but divine glory shining through a people who belong to God.

From the covenant with Abraham, God promised to establish His covenant with Abraham and his descendants after him Genesis 17:7⁠. God’s purpose has always carried generational and missional movement. Blessing was never meant to end with one person; it was meant to flow outward.

When believers reproduce witness, communities begin to see the kingdom through changed lives, faithful teaching, mercy, justice, prayer, and mission.

Today, ask yourself: Who am I helping to follow Jesus? Am I only receiving encouragement, or am I also reproducing witness? Is my faith becoming light for others?

Faith multiplies through people.

Leadership Reflection for Day

Leadership must reproduce witness, not merely preserve activity. A faithful leader does not measure fruit only by attendance, but by disciples raised, gifts released, testimonies multiplied, and mission extended. Christlike leadership trains others to carry the Gospel with courage, humility, and faithfulness. The mission grows when leaders make room for others to become witnesses too.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

make me a faithful witness who reproduces faith in others. Help me not only to speak about You, but to form others in Your truth, love, power, and mission. Open my eyes to those I must encourage, mentor, teach, and send. Let my life help multiply disciples who will carry Your light to others. Amen.
