Teaching with Intention — Forming Disciples

Introduction — Children Yet Unborn

Faith must be taught on purpose beyond each generation. The psalmist speaks of truth being made known so “the generation to come might know” Psalm 78:6⁠. The Hebrew idea behind “teach” often carries the picture of directing, sharpening, or impressing truth deeply. This is more than passing on information; it is formation. Teaching with intention shapes memory, conviction, obedience, and worship of God.

John Chrysostom urged believers, “Let everything take second place to our care of our children,” especially bringing them up in the instruction of the Lord.¹ The Church must recover this urgency.

Truth Must Be Taught Clearly

Proverbs calls us to train a child in the way he should go Proverbs 22:6⁠. Training requires patience, repetition, correction, example, and prayer. We cannot assume that people will automatically inherit faith because they are part of or near religious activity.

Jesus commanded His disciples to teach others to observe all He commanded Matthew 28:20⁠. The Greek word translated “observe” carries the sense of keeping, guarding, and practicing. Discipleship is not complete when truth is heard; it must become obedience.

J. I. Packer warned, “Ignorance of God… lies at the root of much of the church’s weakness today.”² Where truth is not taught diligently, faith becomes shallow. Where truth is taught with love and lived with consistency, faith takes root.

Teaching Must Become a Living Pattern

Titus 2 shows that older believers must help form younger believers Titus 2:4⁠. The faith is passed through Scripture, but also through homes, conversations, correction, worship, service, and example.

Simon Chan reminds us that the Church is not merely a voluntary gathering, but a people formed by God for worship and witness.³ Teaching therefore must not only fill minds; it must shape a people who can live before God and serve His purpose.

Today, ask yourself: Who am I teaching intentionally? What truth must I repeat with patience? Is my life helping someone else know and follow Christ more faithfully? Teaching sustains legacy.

Leadership Reflection for Day

Leadership must not depend on inspiration alone; it must build systems of formation. A faithful leader teaches with purpose, repeats truth with patience, models obedience, and prepares others to teach again. Churches grow deep when leaders do not merely preach messages, but form disciples who can carry truth into families, ministries, communities, and future generations.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

make me faithful in teaching what You have entrusted to me. Help me to speak your truth clearly, live it sincerely, and pass it on intentionally. Raise disciples through my life, my words, my family, and my service. Let the next generation know You, trust You, and walk in Your ways. Amen.
