Walking Forward in Confidence

Scriptures:

As we look forward to the future, what do we see? Having remembered God’s works and embraced the responsibility of passing faith on, I wish to invite you to move forward with confidence—with the confidence grounded in God’s abiding presence. Faith that remembers well and passed on faithfully, becomes faith that can now step forward into the future without fear.

We remember here Joshua as he stands at one of the greatest transition moments in Biblical history. Moses is gone, a long journey has been achieved behind him, but the promise was still ahead. Into that moment God speaks powerfully into the life of a new leader: “Be strong and courageous… for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:6–9). The command to be courageous is anchored not in Joshua’s ability, but in God’s presence. The Hebrew word ḥāzaq (חָזַק), translated “be strong,” carries the sense of being firmly established or supported. Confidence grows where presence is trusted.

In moments of great persecution, early believers often returned to this theme when addressing believers facing uncertainty. Athanasius reminded persecuted Christians that courage is sustained by the nearness of God rather than the absence of threat.¹ Faith moves forward not because the way is easy, but because God is near.

The writer to the Hebrews echoes this assurance by recalling God’s enduring promise: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5–6). Confidence here is communal and confessional—“So we say with confidence…”. Faith speaks courage aloud, reinforcing trust through shared confession. Fear loosens its grip when God’s promise is remembered and spoken out.

The psalmist captures this settled confidence in worshipful language: “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1). Light dispels uncertainty; salvation answers threat. Confidence is not denial of danger, but clarity about who stands with us.

Dale Bruner has observed that biblical courage is always derivative—it flows from reliance on God rather than resolve within oneself.² Faith forward is faith that leans outward toward God’s promise.

Craig S. Keener also notes that confidence empowered by God’s presence enabled early believers to cross cultural, geographic, and spiritual boundaries with bold obedience.³ Confidence propelled their mission, not comfort.

It is on this note that I wish to invite you to deeply reflect. Where is God asking you to step forward—into responsibility, service, reconciliation, or trust? What feels uncertain now may be the very place where God’s presence will be known most clearly.

Faith forward does not rush forward blindly; it walks confidently with God.

Prayer

Ever-present God, thank You for Your promise to go with us. As we face what lies ahead, strengthen our hearts with courage rooted in Your presence. Where fear whispers hesitation, remind us of Your faithfulness. Teach us to walk forward with confidence, trusting not in ourselves, but in You who lead, sustain, and keep us. Amen.
